Obama the “Fascist!” And other words for which conservatives don’t know the meaning

“Words, words, words,” said Hamlet to Polonius in Act 2, Scene 2. But what’s in a word? As it happens, a lot – a very great lot. Words and their meanings have power, both in the knowing of them, and in the public forgetting. Politicos know this and put a great deal of effort and money into choosing, using, twisting and turning of words to their advantage. Republican wordsmiths like Dr. Frank Luntz have spent lifetimes honing their craft and creating a new American political lexicon. Countless focus groups and polls in the hands of these political advertising agents have made words like “values”, “mainstream media”, and “activist judges” a part of our national politispeak. They have turned once noble adjectives like “liberal” into such a dirty word, that liberals started calling themselves “progressives”, and now Glenn Beck is working to subvert the meaning of that word also.

However, one of my favorites is “Fascism”. Have you seen the Tea Party signs depicting our president in Joker-face above the single, glaringly accusatory word “Fascism”? Heard one of the conservative media lap-dog pundits use the word “Fascist” when referring to Obama? They compare him with Hitler and Stalin too. None of these make any sense of course, but the closest to what they want to impart would be “Socialist”. Obama embraces some socialized forms of governance, no different from the mixed system we have always enjoyed, and so the right would like to paint him as a “Socialist”. Stalin was a “Communist”, at least on paper. In truth, he was a dictatorial sociopath, not a true communist at all. Hitler was a “Nazi”. The Nazis, which were, in fact, conservative fascists, hated communists. Even though Hitler’s party was called the National Socialist Party, in reality it had little to do with socialism, much the same as President Obama’s mixed-system approach. Therefore, the right uses words like “Nazi, Fascist, Socialist and Communist” to scare the bejeezus out of the citizenry about anyone or anything which threatens their agenda.

Benito Mussolini and fellow fascist Adolph Hitler

Why I particularly like the right’s intentional malapropism of calling Obama a “fascist”, is that, if that word describes any political bent, it would be today’s ultra-conservative movement. World War II-era Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini somewhat dubiously claimed to have coined the word “Fascism” to describe the merging of corporations with government to create a corporatocracy. This is not the socialization of business, which would imply the citizenry collectively own the businesses, but the inverse, in which the corporations rule the population. They bitterly oppose liberalism.

If either party is pro-business, it is the Republican party. If either ideology blurs the line of ethics through cronyism or exchanging policy for political contributions, it is the conservative ideology. Which party claimed victory over the recent Supreme Court decision to allow anonymous corporate campaign donations? Which party wants to eliminate taxes for the nobles corporations? Which party wants to do away with regulations designed to protect the public and consumers in the name of profit? Which party consistently makes analogous comparisons between governing and running a business? Which party has historically opposed, weakened or repealed any laws favoring labor? Which party opposes minimum wage? Which party is responsible for the costly and disastrous no-bid contracts awarded to Halliburton and Bechtel? For that matter, which party lied about the reasons to initiate a pre-emptive war in order to secure access to oil? Which party pushes Torte reform as if it is the be-all and end-all of our country’s medical cost problems, instead of representing a mere 1-2% of total health care costs? Which party transferred the cost of cleaning up illegal toxic waste dumps from the polluting corporations to the American taxpayers? Which party prefers that an insurance company, whose sole existence is for profit, make decisions regarding your life and health, over that of officials elected by “we the people?”

Who’s the fascist? Most conservatives are only guilty of ignorance of vocabulary and history when they claim the president or other democratic leaders are fascists. But the ones who start these lies, these scare tactics, these emotional appeals to the basest natures and fears of their listening and viewing audiences are not stupid people. Pick a scary word, an emotionally charged word, and the willfully blind sheep who follow them will accept it as gospel and go forth and spread the lie in their names.

You’re so right, TBB, but after reading about the Hillbuzz debacle the past few days, it’s obvious that these people have an incredible ability to miss the truth, though it might be staring them in the face.

This is what I am talking about bigot.
MANY conservatives are not dumb. They are not backwoods hillbillies.
To say that ALL conservatives are just dumb and don’t know what fascism is, is bigoted!

You asked ME to not rank you all in together, but what about if I ask you? Hmm??
GHWBush 41=fascistic, Clinton, a little more mild. GWBush brought us the patriot act and was fascistic, didnt give a hoot in hell about the Constitution, and here we have Obama, and all of the sudden, everything is wonderful?!
    Come on.

BTW: I left you a troop salute and never saw you again.
    I was very upset 😦
