Half a million people marched on Washington last week. They didn’t get news coverage.

Half a million march on Washington - peacefully.

Half a million march on Washington - peacefully.

They did not riot.

They did not threaten Congress with guns, pitchforks or revolution.

They did not spit on members of congress or hurl bigoted abuse at them.

They did not declare hate for the President. They don’t claim that he is an usurper. They hold respect for him and the position he occupies.

They love America.

They are the true patriots.

They are the people that clean up the shit in the bath rooms, clean the dishes in restaurants and change the dirty sheets at hotels. For that, they get mistreated, get no contract jobs, get no recourse from the Government, get no back up from the police if mugged or worse. They are not even included in the health care reforms just passed.

Despite all of that, they still love America.

It is time for America to deliver on an ancient promise.

American promise

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

lovely post… it’s amazing to me the way the media covers 3000 tea partiers but mostly ignores 500,000 people marching for immigration reform

That quotation you called an “ancient promise” at the end of your article is in no way any policy of the united states: it was a poem written by someone who was not referring to the united states, and it was put on a statue made by the French, who then gave it to the US as a gift.

    • March 31, 2010 at 3:04 pm

So the Statue of Liberty is a lie? Why do right wingers hate America?

      • Adam
        March 31, 2010 at 3:41 pm

What an ignorant, ridiculous, reactionary reply. Regardless of what “side” you’re on, are facts so meaningless to you that you just dismiss them out of hand? People who respond this way to logic and fact are the true HATERS.

          March 31, 2010 at 4:49 pm

I took away that thebigotbasher was making a tongue in cheek comment. I don’t think s/he was actually suggesting right wingers hate america. Your comment is exactly true, and I think that the parent was making a remark about how anyone who said anything against far right propaganda over the last decade was accused of hating america.

            March 31, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Not that it matters, it’s not like they can get them out anyway. It is just a waste of taxpayer money to try and stop them. There are what, 12 million immigrants? And they cost about 7k a piece to remove? So that is about 84 billion. The homeland security budget is ONLY 35 billion. I’m not afraid of some immigrants, but I would like my country to be properly defended against REAL threats. I haven’t seen any immigrants try and blow themselves up lately. I think there are bigger fish to fry, America needs to get it’s priorities straight.

    • April 2, 2010 at 12:43 pm

do you know what all of those job openings could do for america? fuck our economy is so shitty right now and there are so many people out of work because of it that a lot of those jobs people would love to take up just to have a job.

  3. March 31, 2010 at 6:32 am

Too bad all these people broke Federal law to get here, and are committing a crime every day they stay here, unlike the true immigrants, like my ancestors, who came in legally and yet suffered all the same discrimination and problems as the illegals that you’re holding up as patriots.

    • O
      March 31, 2010 at 3:31 pm

As a native Indian, I totally disagree with you! You stupid immigrants, you came here and spread cholera and dysentry! That is what your filthy ancestors did! Then they usurped our land and killed us. Get you facts right before you take a dump on others.

Okay, so since the US was created through conquest, the US should have no borders whatsoever, right? And that anyone on the planet Earth should be able to just show up and be available for rights, privileges, and benefits from day one, right? That’s a recipe for a viable state, no doubt.

Half a million people, who, can never aspire to more that bathroom shit cleaners because of their illegal status.

You cannot contribute to a society you are not part of. You can only leach from it.

That is what they are doing. They are lowering the standard of living for everyone.

If they want to come to this country, and they want to IMMIGRATE here, then there is a legal way to do that. Just coming here illegally, and working under the table, for less than minimum wage, with no workers rights, while taking advantage of our social services, is not valid. They are lowering the standard of living for everyone. They are destroying the very things that make this country a desirable place to live.

The only news I would like to have red about these 500,000 people, is that they got rounded up and deported.

    • Nick
      March 31, 2010 at 4:52 pm

Lowering the standard of living my ass. Try getting rid of all the illegals and watch the bottom fall out as all the jobs they had aren’t taken up by people because nobody else wants those jobs. You’ll say that people do, and yes, for some of the jobs. But so many of the jobs are just so undesirable, you’d have a problem on your hand – they’re the foundation of the economy.

Even if they weren’t, to strip rights from a group of people because they haven’t jumped through our hoops is sickening.

I call bullsh**. A $50 an hour programmer is not going to take a $7.25 an hour job, just to have a job. Those types of people are rare. The majority are going to take unemployment and bust a** to find another comparable job or multiple smaller jobs to add up to the salary they were making.
A call center worker isn’t going to take a job picking tomatoes for cents a pound because the company outsourced their job. They’re going to go back to school, take a job of McD’s, or find the next call center to work at. I think you under-estimate the fact that US citizens have it pretty good for the most part. They don’t have to get their hands as dirty as they used to and they like that.

nice. but you haven’t really given any press coverage either. poetic, but not very informative. 😦

I would have thought the Statue of Liberty summed that up. America a Country built on immigration.

  12. luca brasi
    March 31, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Tell them to get to the back of the line and get in this country legally. Tens of millions of immigrants before them have followed the legal route of gaining entry into this country.

    • March 31, 2010 at 1:36 pm

They want a path to legal entry at the moment there is no such path.

      • evilWhiteMale
        March 31, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Sure there’s a path. They can return to their home countries and apply for admission into the US, just like other immigrants do. Or they can sneak in and demand special treatment and be called patriots when they have the nerve to protest in the nation’s capitol, I guess.

  13. Josh
    March 31, 2010 at 1:54 pm

What don’t you understand about the word illegal? They have NO rights in our country whatsoever. If these people want to come and live here, they need to do it legally. We are still a nation of law (for now) and as such, they must follow the rules in order to have ANY rights in our country. Yes, we welcome them, but legally — not sneaking over the border in the dead of night. For now, round them all up and ship them back across the border.

    • March 31, 2010 at 1:59 pm

How about giving them a path to legal status? Do the words on the Statue of Liberty mean nothing?

      • Adam
        March 31, 2010 at 3:46 pm

The words on the State of Liberty are a poem. By your demonstrated leaps in logic, is “The Cat in the Hat” our next Constitution?

      • Aaron
        March 31, 2010 at 7:22 pm

youre right those words should still be exactly what we represent. also what the hell are the n*****s doing away from the farm, oh wait a law changed. and what the hell are women doing working and voting, oh wait a law change. and what the hell cant we openly shoot any animal we want at any time, oh wait laws protect them too.

        • March 31, 2010 at 7:46 pm

I ***d your statement, no need to display bigotry.

  14. Chris
    March 31, 2010 at 2:30 pm

The path to legal status is to apply from their home countries.

  15. BasherofTheBigotBasher
    March 31, 2010 at 2:37 pm

You talk about a path to legal status like there isn’t one already in place. Just because it’s not as easy as you would like does not mean that there isn’t one. People need to go through hoops and hurdles to earn the right to work in this great country and contribute to its well-being. If you let everyone in who applies you are going to flood the country. People get green cards and visas and apply to be a citizen. Many of the good people I work with still aren’t citizens of this great country but they have been living here in peace and lawfully for sometimes 7+ years. You cannot GIVE citizenship to everyone who wants one, there is a process… You should be more concerned about the health and well-being of your comrades around you and the blights that cover all of our lives.

    > What don’t you understand about the word illegal? They have NO rights in our country whatsoever.

What I don’t understand is how this is consistent with:
We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights….

I think these words are _very_ important to what America is (and I think you do too. If you don’t recognize them, well, you’d never pass a citizenship test.) Yes, they are here illegally, and yes, they do not have the full rights of citizens. But there are certain inalienable rights that all men and women have in America. It’s what we stand for.

(And what those are is open for debate, but callously assigning all illegal immigrants to no-rights status is very unamerican.)

    • Aaron
      March 31, 2010 at 7:23 pm

actually i bet you the majority of “americans” would agree with the “unamerican” thing to do.

    March 31, 2010 at 2:56 pm

For those that keep suggesting the answer is that they need to legally immigrate to this country, please stop talking about that which you know nothing about.

Ever tried to immigrate to the US? Its nearly impossible, costs a lot, and takes forever. I have three guys in my office that all have wives they met overseas, and all of them have horror stories about how difficult it was to even bring their LEGAL wives into the US. (took years and 10’s of thousands)

What these people are protesting IS the immigration system, not that they WANT to remain illegal or “leech” off our system as one suggested.

Check into their plight, then tell me if this is the land that will take “those unwashed masses”. Bunch of hypocritical racists.

    • evilWhiteMale
      March 31, 2010 at 4:10 pm

If our immigration system needs to be streamlined, that is for the people of the United States to decide. It is not for the people of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, and other countries to invite themselves in and then demand a fast track to citizenship. Would a faster immigration system benefit our country? That is the most important consideration. Compassion for impoverished foreigners is also important, but it takes a back seat to our national interest.

    • Jazz
      March 31, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Have you ever been an American trying to immigrate to Europe? It’s nearly impossible. Immigration should be a difficult task. You are changing citizenship of your country for God’s sake, that should be something able to do on the fly. We need to bring in more educated immigrants, not sheetchangers, we have plenty of out of work natural born citizens out of work that would love to do that.

Mr or Ms Bigotbasher: I don’t want to sound harsh, but telling us where is not very helpful without also telling us who, what, and why.

    • March 31, 2010 at 3:33 pm

It was the Immigration reform rally last week. I used the picture of the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of the need for immigration reform – hence the comment about it is time for America to live up to an ancient promise. The main picture also links to a more detailed argument about the need for reform.

I totally understand that all Americans are immigrants and we all started here illegally but honestly. Our Economy is in the crapper and we dont even have enough jobs in this country for the people living here now. Just about every other country in the world denies citizenship unless you can provide the country with a needed skill. I know this is not PC to say but honestly, taking all of the world’s uneducated is really hurting us, we are a very ignorant country as it is
