Sony PS3s – partying like it is 1999

End of days

Party like it's 1999

If you have the newer slim PS3 – this doesn’t affect you. The old fat boxes are however keeling over wishing they were back in the days before George Bush.

Fat PS3s around the World are having heart attacks before their owners. Stuck in a time warp wishing for the original Silent Hill and for Final Fantasy VIII never mind XIII.

If you do not heave the healthier, slim PS3, with all the fat bits (linux and PS2 emulation) stripped out, if you go out in the woods today you will be sure of a big surprise.

Even expensive debug units are keeling over.

Fat PS3s are resetting themselves to December 31 1999 instead of March 1 2010. This then screws the copyright protection on games, the ability to get on Playstation Network, games with “trophies” can not sync back to PSN. Attempting to reset the date does not fix the problem.

If you try to play a game with trophies you get this

Registration of the trophy information could not be completed. The game will quit. (8001050F)

Games that do not use trophies, older ones and games like Metal Gear Solid and God of War are apparently ok. Although I would expect the date may be a problem.

Sony have sent out the following message via their PS3 twitter.

PSN status update: We’re narrowing down the issue and continue to work to restore service to all. Updates as soon as we have them.

Expect a firmware upgrade soon.

Still, a little down time is far better than this

three red rings of death

I own a Wii, a PS3 and a 360 and I still have to say, every time I go to switch on my XBOX 360, I still fear the three red rings of death (3rrod).

No worries about that on the Wii or PS3.
